Grammatical Reasoning in
the real world
Grammatical reasoning is important for understanding what people are saying—even if they don’t always communicate clearly. This task was originally designed to measure mental capabilities in divers, who can experience a state akin to drunkenness at extreme depths. Not only were divers impaired on the Grammatical Reasoning test, but stress seemed to play a role in making the impairment worse. Sleep deprivation and a more traditional drunkenness (i.e., alcohol) have also been shown to reduce performance.
