Are Creative People Right-Brained or Left-Brained?

Share:

Most brain enthusiasts know that a complex phenomenon like creativity does not "live" in a single part of the brain. Creativity is a multi-layered, ever-changing process that can't be captured by activity in the left half, the right half, or any other isolated part of the brain.

Are there any differences in a highly creative person's brain, though? New research demonstrates that the most creative people have a wealth of connections between the brain's hemispheres.

Here's a summary of the research at ScienceDaily. Creativity is hard to measure (believe me, I've studied it), but this research makes intriguing progress.

It also raises a lot of questions; for example, are these differences the cause of increased creativity, or the effects of creative pursuits? The researched measured creativity was by asking about creative activities, such as dancing. Were these people better at dancing because of their connected brains, or did dancing cause their brains to be better connected?

It's worth keeping these kinds of questions in mind when reading any new research. There's still a lot of brain science left to do.
